No doubt, working out at home with your own gym equipment has its benefits. There’s no need to account for the travel time to and from the gym and you never have to worry about waiting for sweaty gym equipment. On top of that, home is also a pressure-free zone to exercise (because, truthfully, gyms can feel a little intimidating and scary, especially if you are new to fitness).

While there are some downsides that come along with working out at home like limited space and equipment which are not exactly cheap, there are different cost-effective pieces of home gym equipment in Singapore that can be used for a quick cardio and strength workout. Here are some basic equipment you will need.

1. Exercise Mat

At the literal base level, an exercise mat or a yoga mat is an absolute must for any kind of floor workout. There are two different kinds of mats that can be used - a yoga mat and a jump mat. The jump mat is usually a little thicker and used for more intense exercises like plyometrics and core work. It can also be used as a yoga mat if you prefer a little more cushioning.

With an exercise mat, ensuring sufficient space is key to fit the mat and your exercise routines. We would suggest making space in your living room for fitness and leaving your bedroom for sleeping. You can also bring your exercise mat outdoors to be one with nature.

2. Dumbbells

Purchasing dumbbells in Singapore exposes you to a world of opportunities when working out at home. They can be used for various purposes including isolated strength workouts like bicep curls and increasing your resistance during compound exercises such as lunges and squats. If you are not sure what dumbbell weights to get as a beginner, we recommend going for a medium set, somewhere between 2kg to 20kg.

Purchase a set that can be used with multiple weight settings which are way easier to store compared to getting many different sets of weights. You can also get crafty and DIY your own dumbbells for lighter-weight exercises with household items like rice bags and oil bottles.

3. Kettlebells

Kettlebells are a more versatile piece of equipment due to their sizes and functionalities. A kettlebell can be tucked away easily and gets your heart rate up when it is used. It can be used for squats, toning shoulders and back rows. You can even do traditional kettlebell exercises such as kettlebell swings and Turkish get-ups or add them to traditional strength training workouts including squats, back rows and lunges to switch things up!

A couple of quality kettlebells in Singapore, will set you for life as they won't break, rust or wear down. They will be your best workout friend.

There are other pieces of equipment you can purchase if you have specific workout needs but these three basic items should be enough to get you started on your home workout journey.
